Municipalities are faced with converging issues such as: Unaffordable housing, Homelessness, Mental Health & Substance Use, Social Disorder. One of Council’s priorities listed in the corporate strategic plan is ‘Fostering Complete Communities”. Municipalities play a crucial role in addressing both safety and social development issues within their jurisdictions. Safer communities can mean enhancing our public spaces, ensuring we have safe and accessible housing for all members of the community, and people feel safe in their neighborhoods.
The City’s role is to facilitate, coordinate and convene discussions to identify the strengths and weaknesses of current safety, security, and social development initiatives. Community safety & social development refers to the efforts and initiatives undertaken by local government authorities or municipalities to enhance the well-being and quality of life of their residents through addressing safety and social issues, promoting inclusivity, and implementing programs and policies that contribute to the overall social progress of the community. Social Development specifically addresses issues that our community is facing such as; unaffordable housing, homelessness, mental health & substance use, and social disorder.
The Social Development page on the City’s website was launched in March 2024. In April 2024, the City of Port Alberni - Community Safety & Social Development, held a gap analysis workshop to determine gaps in service areas. We have many social service agencies operating in the Valley; the goal was to identify where the gaps in services are. The workshop, in partnership with the Alberni Clayoquot Health Network, and the Island Health - Mental Health and Substance use, discussed five key areas, one being community safety. Gaps identified were policing resources, crime, clean streets, healthcare, homelessness, and poverty. In 2026, a map will be created with different indicators of services such as crime prevention, education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and social services.
