The City of Port Alberni, along with Bowerman Construction Ltd., will be commencing construction of the “Burde Street Watermain and Storm Drain Project”. This project will include Burde Street from the 10th Ave intersection to the Anderson Ave intersection. Work will begin in the area August, 2024, with overall project completion currently anticipated for October, 2024.
The contractor will be performing necessary upgrades to the existing watermain along with the installation of a new storm drain system. This will provide homes with upgraded water services and new storm drain connections. This project will bring increased capacity and improved utility services for the residents of the neighbourhood and Port Alberni.
Regular work hours for this project will be Monday through Friday, from 7:00am to approximately 5:00pm. During these working hours, vehicle traffic to and from the site may cause congestion in certain areas. Affected residents will be notified of any temporary water service disruptions at least 48 hours in advance. Please cooperate with traffic control personnel, and obey posted signage, as it is crucial to the safety of the construction crews, yourself, and your fellow motorists/pedestrians.
Vehicle and pedestrian access to properties fronting the construction area will be maintained, but may be disrupted for short periods. Some areas of the sidewalk and roadway will be strictly off limits for all non-construction personnel for the duration of the project. The off limits areas will be delineated with fences, ropes, and warning signage. This project will involve the use of heavy equipment and large trucks.
Finally, this project has the potential to create noise, dust, and vibration. Please be confident crew members are diligently working to minimize these inconveniences to the best of their abilities. PROJECT OVERVIEW:
A multi-stage project has been ongoing since 2016, along Burde Street from 7th Avenue to Arrowview Heights, to:
Replace very old cast iron watermains with new larger watermains (increasing reliability, pressure and available quantity).
Install storm sewers on road sections that don’t have existing storm sewers (separation sanitary and storm sewage, to reduce overflows of untreated sewage to the Alberni Inlet).
Rebuilding and modernization of roads and sidewalks, along sections where the existing road is in poor condition.
The City has previously completed work on Burde Street from 7th to 10th Avenue, and from 16th Avenue to Arrowview Heights.
Water and sewer work has been completed from Anderson Ave to 15th Avenue.
Under the current contract (commenced August 12) Bowerman will compete the watermain replacement and storm sewer installation from 10th Ave to Anderson Ave.
In September (start date TBD), another contractor will be carrying out the water and sewer works between 15th Ave and 16th Ave.
Later, a separate contract will be awarded to rebuild the road and sidewalk, and add bicycle lanes, from 10th Ave. to 16th Ave. Dates and further details will be provided here once available.
